1. Sophisticated new materials would emerge to save lives (artificial hearts, shatterproof glass, bulletproof vests), conserve energy (home insulation, lightweight cars), and expand human horizons (around the globe via aircraft, across the solar system via spacecraft, and through the World Wide Web via computer). And in the 21st century, a new generation of super synthetics promises to again reshape our world and ease many of the planets most pressing problems.

Medieval alchemists never did brew up gold, but modern chemists tinkering with the elements indeed yield priceless materials. By taking simple building blocks of matter such as carbon, nitrogen, and hydrogen, and putting them through rigors not normally endured on Earth, todays alchemists create substances never seen in nature, with otherworldly qualities. Agents such as chemical catalysts, intense heat or cold, and massive pressure can coax simple, small molecules to break up and rearrange their components into a polymera huge, complex mega molecule arranged in a long, highly ordered chain. Plastic, from the Greek root to form, refers to any of these polymers that can be molded to hold a desired shape. To date, hundreds of different polymers have been createdsome feather light but stronger than steel, others impervious to scorching heat or arctic freezeand new plastics are in the works with even more impossible qualities, such as the ability to heal themselves and remember to change shape and function in varying conditions.

2. Idei rubs his hands in anticipation of being able to use the Web and broadband to sell directly to consumers and supplant broadcasters and cable TV systems and record stores and video-rental outlets as the primary purveyor of Sonys movies and music. Heck, he even wants to turn Sonys little-kpown financial services subsidiary into an online bank.

Attempting all this gives him the perfect rationale for shuffling and streamlining Sonys historically Balkanized product divisions and manufacturing operations to make them stop duplicating effort and sabotaging one another. Who says a Japanese company cant behave more like a U.S. high-tech enterprise? Why not junk stodgy compensation systems that reward seniority and instead start demanding performance? Who really needs lifetime employment, anyway? Why not consider spinning off parts of Sony into independent companies with their own stocks and identities?
