严复的直属上司李鸿章时任直隶总督，且得到慈禧的倚重，专门处理洋务，但 他并不能借助李鸿章的支持而得以在官场上一展所长。不过，严复认定是因为自 己不由科举出身当日仕进，最重科举，故所言每不见听，欲博一第入都，以与 当轴周旋。所以严复曾钻研八股文，且从 1885 年至 1894 年的 9 年中，曾 4 次 参加乡试，却始终未第，这无疑是严复一生的大憾事。他曾有诗:当年误习旁行 书，举世相视如夷蛮。虽然他在甲午后思想有所改变，不在尝试走科举之路， 甚至大力抨击八股文， 并决定通过翻译西学救国，但是由于他在官场中的地位不 高，不得不借助外部力量，加强自己的影响。
