胡新天，1988年毕业于中国科技大学，同年考到昆明动物研究所做硕士研究生，师从蔡景霞研究员进行灵长类神经生物学的研究，于1991年获得硕士学位并留所工作。1994年，被美国普林斯顿大学心理系录取，师从著名神经科学家，美国科学院院士C．Gross 教授，进行灵长类认知神经科学的研究。其间，主要研究顶叶，前额叶在空间信息处理中的功能，部分博士论文研究结果发表在science上。2000年，获得普林斯顿大学哲学博士学位后，到贝勒医学院做博士后。师从著名神经科学家David Sparks进行眼睛运动的神经控制机制机理研究。2005年，入选中科院百人计划，并将其在美国实验室使用的全套设备运到中国科学院昆明动物研究所安装调试完毕，继续进行运动和知觉的方面研究。同时，他原来的导师Dave Sparks也受聘为动物所研究员，加盟动物所灵长类神经科学的研究。
