Visual system has been widely used as a good model to study the mechanisms underlying brain functions. In this laboratory, we are studying how the visual information is processed in both image-forming and non-image-forming visual systems in mammals. The approaches include molecular genetics, electrophysiology, optical imaging and behavioral analysis.

1). The molecular mechanism that determines the coupling between calcium channels and synaptic vesicles and how this spatial organization governs vesicle release probability, vesicle release kinetics and synaptic plasticity.

2). The signaling mechanisms that link different modes of synaptic transmitter release to neuronal coding.

Neural mechanisms underlying visual perception and recognition for objects, particularly interested in investigating the cortical representation of object features. The ongoing projects are on the neural coding for luminance, contrast, form, and motion, and also on the functional organization in the visual cortex.

The signaling transduction in the neuro degenerative diseases, such as the signal cascades and the regulation of Parkinson\'s diseases related genes -DJ-1 and PINK1. The role and regulation of FOXO in neurodegenerative diseases is under investigation in our laboratory. We are also interested in the characterization of molecular mechanisms of oncogene Muc1 in tumorigenesis and the possibility of Muc1 as a therapeutic target.
